When wandering through the Alternative Wedding Fair in Birmingham this year, I stumbled upon something utterly unexpected. A venue so small, so eccentric, and so steeped in magic that it felt like stepping into a fairy tale. Hidden in the folds of the Malvern Hills sits The Theatre of Small Convenience, a miniature marvel reborn from ashes, history and community spirit.

Once a Victorian gentlemen’s lavatory, this tiny building was transformed in 1999 into what would become the world's smallest commercial theatre, officially recognised by Guinness World Records in 2002. Measuring just 5.23 metres long and 2.8 metres at its widest point, it has hosted puppetry, poetry, monologues, folk tales and even opera, all on a stage one and a half metres wide.

After a devastating fire in 2018, the theatre fell silent. But Malvern locals refused to let the story end there. Through fundraising, determination and a deep love for the arts, the theatre has been lovingly restored by its new custodians, Loz Samuels, Dibah Farooqui and Dr Jan Birtle, who have breathed life back into this pocket sized powerhouse.

Today, the theatre is stepping into a new role: an intimate and wonderfully unusual wedding venue.
As a celebrant, I can already imagine the ceremonies that would unfold here. The theatre is a natural stage for storytelling, and the closeness of the space invites a ceremony that feels deeply personal. I can picture couples exchanging vows between the red velvet curtains, surrounded by just twelve of their nearest and dearest, making for an intimate and meaningful ceremony.

A short procession from the theatre up into the hills would make a beautiful and symbolic transition from one chapter of life to the next. Meet the Theatre Team

Q: What does it feel like to see the theatre restored and thriving again after the fire?

A:It feels like a huge achievement to see the theatre up and running again. We are all hugely proud of. We get such a lot of great feedback, and we know the venue is so loved by the community, who are so supportive. It is such an honour to be able to restore the building and keep Dennis, the original creator's legacy alive. It's such a special and unique place.

Q: What drew each of you to take on the restoration?

A:We are all big culture enthusiasts, all with our own tastes and preferences. I think we all acknowledge that this building is such a treasure, we couldn't turn our backs on it. We are all passionate about working with communities. I've been working in the arts all my life and am a maker so I knew I could bring skills to the project that would be really valuable.

Q: The theatre has such a rich and quirky history. Do you have a favourite story or memory from its past?

Dennis is the person who'd have the best stories. For me there are still many, though we haven't event been open for a year yet. Our opening night was quite an emotional experience; we got 24 people and a dog into a tiny space, had a DJ playing a very eclectic set, a lot of dancing, laughter and a huge sense of relief. It was a riotous and joyful occasion. Getting Dennis to unveil his green plaque was also very emotional, it's the first time I've seen him speechless.

Q: How would you describe the atmosphere of the theatre to someone who has never stepped inside?

It's like stepping into a different world as soon as you enter the theatre, the decor is opulent and quirky, and the vibrant blue ceiling with its gold star constellation beautifully brings it all together. It's full of craftsmanship, which gives it a sense of love; it's almost like a chapel crossed with a theatre. It feels safe and exciting at the same time.

Q: What inspired you to open the space up for weddings and ceremonies?

As I said, the interior is quite chapel-like so it lends itself perfectly to small ceremonies. We want to share magical moments, and what is more magical than a wedding? As the theatre is so small, generating income is a challenge; weddings are a great way for us to keep the bills paid and the door open. We want to keep it exclusive, we are a theatre primarily, but if couples have their special day there means the theatre can thrive, then it's the perfect combination.

Q: What kind of couples do you imagine being drawn to such an intimate theatrical venue?

We've had a couple fly over from New Zealand to marry in the theatre; they both work in film-making props and sets. We have another couple who have been together for many years marrying in June; the bride is an artist. We expect we'll attract people who want something arty, memorable and intimate. We had 22 people in the first wedding, and the couple even had space for a little dance at the end. We know it will be people who want something really different and unique, of course. It's quite a conversation piece to be able to say you got married in the smallest theatre in the world.

Q: Are there any unique features or details inside the theatre that you are especially proud of?

I'm proud I managed to restore the dancing horses that were missing when we first got the keys, they are now our logo. Dennis put Multum in Parvo on the plynth, which means much in little; it works on so many levels. It's a great logo which is on all our merchandise. The horses were very blackened from the fire. I cleaned them up and painted only one back to its original gold colour, and made it a new hat, a red bridal with a white swans feather plume. Now they represent the past and the future. They are really beautiful I think. There are so many lovely details in the theatre, we have beautiful upholstery which has elevated the old chairs to a new level. They were very rusty and broken but we restored them all and are proud to have them back in the theatre.

Q: What are your hopes for the theatres future creatively, culturally or within the community?

I hope the theatre will thrive and become known as a place that is brave enough to present something different. A place for artists who want to experiment, a place for those in the community who can't relate to the mainstream offer to come and find their spiritual home. This is the spirit that Dennis created it in, he was a real outsider artist and we want to keep that spirit alive. There are few places left like this. We want to be an antidote to digital, shiny, loud entertainment.
